The University of Melbourne Alumni Association Singapore (“UMAAS”) is pleased to announce that it will be supporting the Run For A Cause (“RFAC”) program held in conjunction with the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2009 (“SCSM”) to raise funds for the Bukit Ho Swee Family Service Centre.

The Bukit Ho Swee Family Service Centre is a community based focal point for family resources that promotes and strengthens the well being of families in distress. In this uncertain economic time, any assistance to the needy families would be welcomed.

UMAAS members who are interested to support this charity can register for RFAC as follows:
- register their name by 2 September 2009 by responding that they will be attending this event in our facebook event page and write on the wall, their facebook name. Our committee member will contact you via facebook to get your details for registration
- pay UMAAS a flat registration fee of $55 per person (regardless of category of run). UMAAS will register participants under the banner of UMAAS Running Team. For those that have already registered for the SCSM, they can transfer their registration to the UMAAS Running Team to enjoy this special rate or to help with the charity fund raising (please note that payment of $55 will still need to be paid to UMAAS and the rebate on the registration fee already paid will be done directly to the participant by SCSM). To encourage more members to run for charity, registered participants that are paying less than $55 will have the difference between your registration fee already paid and $55 top-up by UMAAS.
- a donation card will be provided for members to seek donations until 30 October 2009. Should UMAAS be one of the top 5 donating organization, all participants registration fee will be refunded.
- For those that are not running, you can still do your part for charity by seeking donations. Please contact us via facebook for a pledge card.

Why register with UMAAS:
- UMAAS will be providing free running vest for the first 25 members who sign up for RFAC.
- Runners will also automatically participated in the Non-profit Distance Challenge under the UMAAS Running Team
- UMAAS will be establishing a training program for all participants. Details will be provided later once confirmed.
- You will still be entitled to all benefits of individual registrants in SCSM

Fireworks by the Bay 2009

It’s the National Day celebration again and once again, the Melbourne University alumni organized the annual fireworks by the bay, this year at the new location of Pierside at One Fullerton.

People started to stream in from 7:00pm and pretty soon, our allocated tables were filled with revelers ready to enjoy the fireworks display. There was a free flow of finger food and most importantly… wine from Australia..

Soon enough the fireworks began and I shall let the pictures do the talking:

After being awed by the firework, the mingling began and in all it was a wonderful night under the starry starry skies of Singapore..

The Southern Ridges Canopy walk was the first event of the year organized by the Australian Alumni Association which brings together several Australian universities. When I was told that we would be trekking the Southern Ridges, I quickly surfed the National Parks Board website and this is what I discovered:

- The Southern Ridges comprise a 9-km chain of green open spaces spanning the rolling hills of Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Kent Ridge Park before ending at West Coast Part (lucky thing we stop at Hort Park!)
- It is home to the Henderson Wave that spans Henderson Road connecting Mount Faber Park and Telok Blangah Hill Park. At 36 m above ground, the 274 m long and 8 m wide bridge is the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore (another record for Singapore!)
- It is also home to the Alexandra Arch that crosses Alexandra Road from Telok Blangah Hill Park to Hort Park

This got me all excited until I found out that we had to be at the start point at Telok Blangah Hill Park at 7am. Amazingly, I did manage to get there, just "slightly" late, and the event started with the usual photo taking ceremony

and after that we were ready to start the trek…. and taking that cue, the skies opened and poured rain down on us, but that didn’t stop us and we continued with the trekking

The rain did not last long and after it stopped, we were able to enjoy the fresh smell of the trees and plants that make up this wonderful park. It did somewhat remind us of Melbourne and its “four seasons in a day” name tag. Our alumus members broke into two groups with Michael/Rachel leading the first group and Agnes/Lily the second, there were many photo opportunities and time to make new friends.

At the end of the walk at Hort Park, there was some light refreshments arranged and as a special treat, our alumnus has a dedicated room with scrumptious selection of food especially for our alumnis.

The annual general meeting for the Association in Singapore will be held in this Saturday at 11am.

We would like to invite new member volunteers to come join us in our committee as we need new ideas and support for the group.

Inspired by the title of a poem by Australian writer Henry Lawson, Past Caring is an inter- disciplinary theatrical collaboration involving artists from Singapore and Australia. Urgent issues of adoption, displacement, family, land and journey will be weaved together into a complex and contemporary presentation of text, music, multimedia and movement. A year-long process, the project involved artists making field trips, conducting interviews and creating and presenting nascent works in Singapore and Melbourne. Past Caring will finally see its world premiere in Singapore on 25 February 2009.

Dear fellow members,

I am pleased to announce that the annual general meeting held last Saturday at the Wetterling Teo Gallery, all the proposed resolutions were passed, the financial statements for the year ended 29 February 2008 adopted and a number of new faces including office bearers were elected to the committee. A word of thanks to all members who made the effort to attend the meeting despite the heavy downpour that afternoon.

I wish to extend a warm welcome to all the new members who have just been elected to the committee, Richard, Maurice and Tao Liang. I am particularly glad to welcome back Richard, who has returned from Melbourne, after a one year break. Having served two terms as President of the alumni association since September 2006, I decided to step down at the meeting. We have a new President, Mr Tan Kah Hoe, an accomplished architect and Singapore High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Maldives whom I am sure will lead our alumni association to greater heights. A sincere thank you to the committee for the support they have given me and members who have joined us at the various events we have organized in the past two years.

The University of Melbourne is coming to Singapore and we invite you to be part of our team at the University of Melbourne Open Day expo at the Suntec International Convention & Exhibition Centre on Friday 23rd May.

The aim of the Open Day includes:

· Offering prospective students and their families the opportunity to meet University academic and professional staff and to learn more ‘first hand’ about the “Melbourne Model” and its offerings.
· Recognising and demonstrating the importance and value we place on our Alumni
· Continue to profile, position and strengthen the University in Singapore as a leading institute whose ‘Melbourne Experience’ is an international one, offering world-class research, teaching & learning and best practice knowledge transfer.

Roles for Alumni

Alumni are important advocates for the University of Melbourne. We are seeking 20 alumni (preferably graduates of the last five years), to volunteer at the Expo as part of the University team, to take on a varied range of roles including:
Greeting prospective students and their families as they arrive
Handing out sample bags
Providing directions to seminar sessions
MC on the microphone to announce seminar sessions
Talking to prospective students and their families about your own Melbourne Experience
Assisting with Faculty and course enquiries as required

All alumni volunteers will be given a University of Melbourne branded polo shirt to wear at the event, which will be yours to keep. You will also be presented with a certificate recognising your contribution as a volunteer at the Expo.
A briefing will be held immediately before the event to ensure roles and responsibilities are clear and to introduce the team of volunteers.

This opportunity is limited to 20 alumni only.

Charity Event on 29 March 2008

Dear Fellow Alumni,

We would like to reach out to you to participate in our first charity event for 2008. The University of Melbourne Singapore Alumni would be collaborating with SISGC (Soroptimist International of Singapore (Garden City) ) and the Geylang West Community Club (CC) on 29 March for an outing to Sentosa for the severely disabled.

The 40 participants of the event are residents/ disabled members of public who are receiving financial aids from the CC. The two clubs will be sharing all the cost and logistics. There will be about 40 disabled and 40 volunteers to help them around.

Below are the details and we would like to appeal to you to join us for the event. To date, we will require about 20 more volunteers.

Event: A visit to Sentosa (includes Songs of the Sea, Sentosa 4D Magix)

Soroptimist International (SI) is a worldwide organization for women in management and the professions, working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women. The first Soroptimist club (Soroptimist International of Singapore) was started 22 years ago. Its club SIS (Garden City) was chartered in November 2006. Though the club is new, but it had done serveral projects, among which are raising funds for the Java Earthquake, children''s party for about 200 needy children with Cairnhill CC, bursary awards for disadvantaged children and also hair cutting for the elderly residents at the Sree Narayana Mission Home, a monthly on-going project with about 20 volunteers.

The Geylang West CC has organised various activities for the disabled in the past.

Following the success of the inaugural Women Mean Business luncheon to celebrate International Women's Day (IWD) 2007, the Australian High Commission and National Committee for UNIFEM are again joining forces to host Singapore’s premier IWD event.

This year we are delighted and honoured to have Ms Chua Sock Koong, Group Chief Executive Officer of SingTel as our Special Guest Speaker. A Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst, Ms Chua is an Executive Director of SingTel and a Board Member of Bharti Airtel Limited and JTC Corporation. She is also a member of the Singapore Government’s Council on Corporate Disclosure and Governance and a Member of the Tax Advisory Committee in the Ministry of Finance. Ms Chua has had a distinguished career at SingTel and played a very important role in many of its achievements in local and international markets. SingTel is Asia’s largest telco company with operations in 20 countries worldwide, including Australia, India, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan and Bangladesh; and is the largest Singaporean investor in Australia, through its stakeholding in Optus telecommunications.

Women Mean Business is an Australia-Singapore initiative aimed at commemorating IWD2008 by providing a forum for businesspeople to unite, network and learn from one another. All funds raised from this initiative will be donated to a women's shelter in Batam; assisting UNIFEM's efforts to support women and children affected by domestic violence in Indonesia and across our region.

Tickets: $125 per person ($110 for UNIFEM members), which includes a three-course meal served with fine Australian wine. Table sponsorships are available. Dear fellow Melb Uni alumni,

Let's have a look at what we did to make 2007 Christmas shine by University of Melbourne Alumni Association in Singapore's chapter!

This year, we celebrated a memorable Chritsmas at Leo Espresso Bar - Denise The Wine Shop with a christmas tree, festive decorations, lovely christmas song and last but not least the incredible waiters/waitresses! Over 50 of our alumni, friends and University of Queensland alumni representatives in Singapore joined the party, went home with gifts, prizes, enjoyed fine food, fun games and had a wonderful experience at our party!

Let's cut the story short and enjoy the Christmas photos!

This year we had over 50 alumni and their love ones joining our party and dress in the theme of "Green, Red and Gold". To our surprise, we even had a "Phantom alumni" joining our color theme party!

Pre-cocktail is always the time to meet new friends and old friends that you never thought you'd meet them in Singapore! Some of our alumni had even just returned from Melbourne and had headed right to our party.

After the pre-cocktails, we had our game master - Adrian kick start the games and warmed up the whole crowd by separating them into teams. Shortly there after, all you could hear was laughter!

The games were engaging and all the teams played real hard to win the fantastic prizes on offer!

The pile of wonderful pressies for the gift exchange...everyone went home with one.

Our last game - Mr. & Ms Alumni 2007 competition! Guess who were the winners?

Not them but they were cool hip-hop style partners!

Nope! Not them too they were close but almost there!

Singapore Fireworks Celebration@Marina Bay

On the 18th August 2007, we had an awesome night to watch a beautiful firework competition and celebrated Singapore's 42nd birthday on the roof of Bacchus Waterboat House.

The University of Melbourne Alumni Singapore Association once again gathered many of the new alumni members and our friends to join this wonderful night with free flow of wines and dine right under the stars looking at both the Esplanade and Merlion within sight.

World-class producers from Europe and Asia stage spectacular pyromusicals set the night skies ablaze with beautiful fireworks accompanied by stirring music from the brand new floating stadium at Marina Bay, Singapore.

The Singapore Fireworks Celebration is an annual event as part of its National Day celebration. This year, it featured several local and foreign teams which launched fireworks displays on 17 and 18 August 2007. The event opened in the evening with a festive carnival featuring a wide array of arts and charity stalls, entertaining street performances from Spain and China in the Marina Bay.

All of us had fun on that beautiful night with great companionship, good food and fine wines. We are looking forward for more members to join us in our up coming events in Singapore!

This year the Singapore Melbourne University Alumni Association has arranged front row seats for the viewing of the delightful event at the Bacchus Waterboat House. EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING - 3 FEBRUARY 2007

Purpose : Extraordinary General Meeting ("EGM")

The EGM was convened and declared open my Mr. Michael Heng our President at 10 am upon the satisfaction of the required quorum. Matters discussed included the approval of a proposed constitution and the election of new executive committee members to replace the outgoing executive committee members.

1. Constitution

Our outgoing Vice-President Mr. Richard Tan brought members present through the constitution of the Association and highlighted to the members the proposed changes and counter proposals by various members such as Mr. David Lim, who unfortunately were unable to attend our EGM.

After much discussion, the proposed constitution with further amendments instituted was unanimously passed. A electronic copy of the approved constitution would be made available upon request to all fully paid and admitted Ordinary Members of the Association.

2. Election of New Executive Committee Members

Mr. Michael Heng, expressed his thanks on behalf of the Association to all outgoing executive committee members (Mr. Richard Tan, Ms. Catherine Chan, Mr. Kevin Koh, Ms. Kerry Lau, Mr. Nathaniel Bradshaw, Ms. Ou Jia Jia, Ms. Qiu Minyan, Ms. Jacquelyn Wang) for their contribution and services to the Association since its rejuvenation in July 2006.

The following persons were duly voted into office :-

Wine Appreciation Night - 19 Jan 2007

It was a dark, cold night in Italy... The rain poured down outside, while the winemaker worked on his wine inside. He used methods passed down from his father, who used methods passed down from his father, who used methods passed down from his father, who either invented the methods or copied someone else. The winemaker who toiled on this dark, cold night was called a "loser" by his family, as he had inherited the smallest wine estate from his father. Despite this, he could produce a good-tasting wine!

Several years later, on a not-so-dark and not-so-cold evening, 18 of us entered Hermitage Wines in Singapore to taste the spoils of that dark, cold night. Arnaud is a French buyer of European wines and our guide for the evening. He explained the components of wine, namely acidity (sharpness in mouth), alcohol (e.g. 8%, 14%) and tannin (puckering of gums). On the back of a serviette, he drew this diagram to illustrate that we should find wines in the red area, with at least 2 of these 3 components of wine.

He gave us some pointers when we taste wine. Firstly, look at the wine (identify any sediment or non-uniform colour). Secondly, swirl the wine (let it "breathe" by exposing it to oxygen). Thirdly, smell the wine (beware of any smell of cork or rotten eggs - not good!). Finally, taste the wine (use a slurping technique to incorporate more oxygen).

Arnaud went on to tell us about personally knowing the Italian winemakers (and one of their daughters). He also attempted to explain how the winemakers' personality came out in the emotion of the wine (or was it the winemakers' emotion coming out in the personality of the wine?). Whichever the case, we came as 18 unenlightened souls and left as enlightened souls. Thanks to the Alumni organisers, our friends at Hermitage Wines and the "winner" winemaker (for producing the best-tasting wine of the evening)...

NEW YEAR EVE - ADHOC EVENT

Alumni members were hastily hailed by Elaine via smses on a last minute (it was decided no earlier then 11 am 31 December 2006!) New Year Eve's get together... a total of 11 alumni responded to her smses and turned up at The Olive @ Labrador Park at around 8 pm... dinner was time of quiet discourse, followed by the savoring of the excellent food from Kitchens of The Olive.

After the dinner, those present felt strongly that the night was too young to call it a day..... but, was a good time to relax and let their hair down....Jack, insisted that the venue had to be "The New Asia Bar" for its view... and he promised us that there would be a view of the fireworks from the vantage of this bar, as its located at the 72nd Storey of Swissotel the Stamford! We did see some fireworks... but ....

Party over... it was time for more replenishment... Supper was called for at Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice at RiverValley Road.....

9 Alumni met on 30 December 2006 at Aljunied MRT Station for dinner and durians at Geylang..... thanks to the bad navigation skills of Richard... everyone was subjected to walking longer than necessary .. to the eventual location at Lorong 9. The journey was... ... well... ... educational.

We finally arrived at Lorong 9 and consumed our dinner at a popular stall known as "Lorong 9 Beef Kuay Teow", after the fulfiling dinner, some alumni proceeded to procure some Taiwanese "Dou Hua" from the "popular" stall next door... before heading for durians...

Durians (D24 Sultan)... was a very quick affair... ...

With the main course over, the gathering dispersed and a few adjorned for a cuppa at Vivo City...

EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING ("EGM")

The EGM would be held 3 Feb 2007. All Ordinary members (Life / Term) would be sent a copy of the Notice of EGM via electronic mail by early Jan 2007.

Agenda for EGM -

1. Change / Amendment of Constitution.

A vote will be called to decide on the amendments of the current constitution of the Alumni Association. The approved constitution will be subsequently filed with the Registry of Societies, Singapore.

2. By - Election of 1 new Office Bearer (Vice President ) and 6 new Executive Committee Members**.

The following Executive Committee Members will be stepping down as of 3 Feb 2007, Ms. Catherine Chan, Mr. Kevin Koh, Ms. Kerry Lau, Mr. Nathaniel Bradshaw, Ms. Ou Jia Jia, and Ms. Jacquelyn Wang.

The following Office Bearer (Vice-President) will be stepping down as of 3 Feb 2007, Mr. Richard Tan.

Members who are keen to contribute to our rejuvenation and serve on the Executive Committee are encouraged to stand for elections for the abovementioned positions.

** The Term would commence from 3 Feb 2007 and terminate at the Annual General Meeting to be held on July 2007

The University of Melbourne Alumi Christmas Party 2006 was my first attendance at such an event and one which I certainly look forward to attending in coming years. The idea of catching up with past and present students of the University of Melbourne in Singapore is a golden idea and one which presents members of the Alumni with a unique opportunity to establish a close-knit social network based on shared experiences of studying in Melbourne.

The event this year was a welcome surprise for me, in the sense that it was a more relaxed and casual environment which promoted greater interaction and mingling as compared to a "sit-down" dinner for instance. The choice of location was another welcome surprise, with an ideal ambience and food proving insatiable to the palate. The activities organised during the party further enhanced the interaction and getting to know one another better.

All in all, the UoM Alumni Christmas Party 2006 was nothing short of fantastic and my thanks and appreciation to the committee for their efforts!

CHRISTMAS PARTY 2006 - SIMON SAYS....

The 2nd of December saw 44 University of Melbourne alumni gather at Infuzi Restaurant, Biopolis for the Singaporean alumni association’s Christmas party. As members (and the occasional ring-in from other “almost-as-distinguished” institutions of higher learning) mingled, old friendships were renewed and new ones forged.

The Infuzi kitchens kept hungry alumni fed with a seemingly endless procession of food. Highlights included the roast beef, smoked salmon rolls, cheese and grape skewers and – nearly everyone’s favourite – the chocolate mud cake. This was washed down with a fantastic selection of wines organized by our resident sommelier, Soohoo, of Hermitage Wines. This Australian did notice a tendency towards Kiwi and French vintages in the selection, but the quality was such that any patriotic objections were easily washed down…err…away!

Most attendees seemed very happy to chat and enjoy the hospitality, which meant that the organized games for the evening proved hard to kick-start. Nonetheless after much cajoling from committee members, groups were formed for the Pictionary challenge. Now I am an Arts graduate, so of course I am constitutionally incapable of drawing. It was noticeable, however, that those alumni blessed with Architecture, Design and Fine Arts degrees did make themselves scarce very quickly when the marker pens were brought out. Consequently, there were some very “creative” interpretations of the chosen words. Heads were scratched, brains wracked and ideas tossed around until finally one group was declared the winner and claimed their prize.

Speaking of prizes brings us to the door prize draw. Now I am loath to accuse certain legally qualified members of the organizing committee of corruption, but certain irregularities in the door prize procedure must be pointed out. First there was the Vice President who won the major furniture prize. There were the individuals who managed to pick their own number from the hat. And then there were the boxes of chocolates. Now I absolutely take the Forrest Gump point that “life is like a box of chocolates”. But the question is “when is a box of chocolates NOT like a box of chocolates?” Answer: When Richard Tan tells you it is a box of chocolates. The man is clearly untrustworthy. Those of us – your present correspondent included – who won some of “Richard’s chocolates” were somewhat surprised to find a handsome desk accessory in our package instead. All very dubious indeed! Where are the chocolates, I ask you? There is cocoa on Richard's hands, I am sure of it...

Members also exchanged Christmas presents, so by the end of the evening most people were seen heading home laden down with door prizes and gifts. As the icing on the cake, all attendees received a discount voucher for sleepwear and a voucher for a wine tasting evening at Hermitage Wines – an event many are already penciling into their diaries.

The serious party-goers then repaired to the Velvet Underground at Zouk where intellectual conversation and polite discourse in the best traditions of the University of Melbourne continued into the small hours of the morning.

A good time was had by all.

BE A MEMBER OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

We have 4 categories of membership.

The first category is Honorary Life Membership. Appointment to this category is by invitation only. The Executive Committee of the Alumni Association will appoint from time to time Alumni who are deemed to have made significant contributions to the Alumni Association as an Honorary Life Member. Such members will have all the rights and privileges of a Life Member (Ordinary).

The second category is Life Membership (Ordinary). Alumni are eligible to enrol as a Life Member (Ordinary) after paying the prescribed fees as determined by the Executive Committee. Life Members (Ordinary) will enjoy all activities organised by the Alumni Association at the members rate. Life Members (Ordinary) will be entitled to be present at the Annual General Meetings and Extra-Ordinary General Meetings. They are also entitled to nominate / second / vote and stand for elections for a position in the Executive Committee in the Annual General Elections or By-elections as the case may be.

The third category is Term Membership (Ordinary). Alumni are eligible to enrol as a Term Member (Ordinary) for a term (July to July the following year) (the "Term") after paying the prescribed fees as determined by the Executive Committee. Term Members (Ordinary) will enjoy all rights and privileges of a Life Member (Ordinary) except for the right to nominate / second / vote and stand for elections for a position in the Executive Committee during the Annual General Meeting. Term Members (Ordinary) are however entitled to nominate / second / vote and stand for elections for a position in the Executive Committee in any By-elections which may take place during the Term.

The fourth category is Associate Membership. Spouses of Honorary / Ordinary Members (Life/Term) are entitled to be admitted as Associate Members after paying the prescribed fees as determined by the Executive Committee. On a case by case basis, industry partners and / or persons, whom the Executive Committee deems to be able to contribute or had contributed significantly to the Alumni Association will also be entitled to admitted as an Associate Member after paying the prescribed fees as determined by the Executive Committee.

Associate Members will enjoy all activities organised by the Alumni Association at the members rate. Associate Members will be entitled to be present at the Annual General Meetings and Extra-Ordinary General Meetings and be entitled to speak, however, they would not be entitled to nominate / second / vote and stand for elections for a position in the Executive Committee in the Annual General Elections or By-elections as the case may be.

Q1. Venue : Feedback received showed that many were concerned that the restaurant is located at a "off" location, and thus is inaccessible.

A1. The venue is located at Biopolis which is located close to Buona Vista MRT station (please see map below). The location is actually across the road from "One Rochester" and close to "Holland Village".

Q2. I have a partner (boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse) who is not an Alumni of the University. Could I bring him/her along?

A2. Yes, your partner could attend the event as a guest and would accordingly pay the non-members rate.

Q3. How do I go about to purchase the tickets?

Q4. Are we getting cheap wines?
