MEMBERSHIPS

BE A MEMBER OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

We have three categories of membership.

The first category is Honorary Life Membership. Appointment to this category is by invitation only. The Executive Committee of the Alumni Association will appoint from time to time Alumni who are deemed to have made significant contributions to the Alumni Association as an Honorary Life Member. Such members will have all the rights and privileges of a Life Member (Ordinary).

The second category is Life Membership (Ordinary). Alumni are eligible to enrol as a Life Member (Ordinary) after paying the prescribed fees as determined by the Executive Committee. Life Members (Ordinary) will enjoy all activities organised by the Alumni Association at the members rate. Life Members (Ordinary) will be entitled to be present at the Annual General Meetings and Extra-Ordinary General Meetings. They are also entitled to nominate / second / vote and stand for elections for a position in the Executive Committee in the Annual General Elections or By-elections as the case may be.

The third category is Associate Membership. Spouses of Honorary / Ordinary Members (Life/Term) are entitled to be admitted as Associate Members after paying the prescribed fees as determined by the Executive Committee. On a case by case basis, industry partners and / or persons, whom the Executive Committee deems to be able to contribute or had contributed significantly to the Alumni Association will also be entitled to admitted as an Associate Member after paying the prescribed fees as determined by the Executive Committee.

Associate Members will enjoy all activities organised by the Alumni Association at the members rate. Associate Members will be entitled to be present at the Annual General Meetings and Extra-Ordinary General Meetings and be entitled to speak, however, they would not be entitled to nominate / second / vote and stand for elections for a position in the Executive Committee in the Annual General Elections or By-elections as the case may be.

I would like to enquire if there is any changes in the price of membership for fresh graduates who have graduated for more than 1/2 a year. I would like to be part of the alumni but will appreciate if the life time membership is at a lower rate.

Kindly enlighten me on the following re the UOM Alumni Membership Application Form:

1) Who acts as the 'referee'? Given that one does not know of any other established member (the form requires the referee to have a membership number), can the processor (i.e. personnel processing the application) act as the referee?

2) Fee amount - My personal suggestion is that the fee should be waived for now, to make sign-ups more conducive and enticing, until the Association can demonstrate some tangible benefit(s) for the members. When that happens, members would then be more willing to fork out a sum that commensurates the value of the benefits. But I do understand that it's quite a chicken-and-egg issue i.e. funds are required to produce the tangible benefits.

the $50 should apply to everybody for the first 6 months this alumni thingy started. then after that, the fees of $100 can apply. i feel like we are being penalized for not joining within 6 months of grad - which wasn't possible for a lot of us right?

noticed that my comment here on 8/11/06 had no response. Patiently waiting.

Hi New Graduate

We understand your concern about life time membership fee. Following numerous requests, we have implemented an annual term membership for $20. You may wish to consider this for a start.

We look forward to welcome you onboard and see you at the Christmas Party on 2nd Dec.

Hi Mr Alumni

Your point about referee had been taken up and discussed; hence the late reply. We apologise for the delay.

You will be pleased to know that the requirement for a referee has been waived for the time being. We look forward to have you onboard and participate in our activites. See you at the Christmas Party ..

Hi George

Thank you for your suggestion and understanding that the alumni association requires funds during this pioneering stage to make it succeed.

We have activities lined up for the next few months and we look forward to your participation. See you at the upcoming Christmas Party ..

Hi Anonymous

We appreciate your views. In fact, the committee had a difficult time deciding on the membership fee. We considered various aspects including the ones you suggested. As an alternative, we have implemented an annual term membership for $20. We look forward to having you onboard and participate in our activities.

I am aware of the term membership but would prefer to join as a life member. Can consider extending the offer to more than 1/2 year after graduation, afterall, this is a new alumni and certainly many of us do not have the opportunity for that offer.
